Filing Company Accounts
Filing company accounts is a legal requirement for every registered UK business. Company accounts must be submitted annually to HMRC and Companies House and they offer an overview of an organisations financial activity during their financial year. The accounts need to be accurate and must be delivered to Companies House and HMRC by a specific deadline.
Accounts only need to be filed at the end of a business’s financial year and should include the following information:
- A balance sheet
- A report containing profits and loss
- Notes about the accounts
- A report from a company director
- An auditors’ report (unless the organisation is exempt from giving one)
- The name and signature of at least one company director
The first annual accounts of a business must be provided to Companies House within 21 months of becoming incorporated. However, these accounts cover only a 12-month period, starting on the date the company was incorporated and ending on the accounting reference date.
If you fail to submit your company accounts to Companies House by the specified deadline, you will be issued with a penalty. Nevertheless, in some cases, companies are eligible to apply for a deadline extension. The request for a deadline extension must be made in writing and sent to HMRC within the original time limit.

There are two main methods of filing company accounts. The first is to register with HMRC and send the required forms online. The second method is to file online with Companies House. To do this, businesses must obtain an authentication form from Companies House.
